Black star sapphires set in 14kt gold ear posts

These are beautiful and elegant star sapphire earrings.  In bright light or sunlight they have a bright, sharp star that appears in gold.  In less light they are a deep and glossy black that goes well with the bright gold of their settings.  Wear these earrings with a black dress, for a wedding or formal party!  Why do the star sapphires in the pictures look gold?  The stars in star sapphires are created by light reflecting off of the mineral rutile within the sapphire.  Rutile is gold, so the gold-brown color of the sapphire is the rutile shining in the sun.  The sapphires really are black!High quality black sapphires are 7x5mm oval cabochons.  Ear posts are 14kt gold.  Pictures 2 and 3 show each earring individually, picture 4 shows one earring in direct sunlight and the other in the shade.  Do all sapphires have a star?  No.  Star sapphires have rutile (which looks like little metallic threads) running through them.  The gems are then cut and turned into cabochons that are oriented to reflect light off the rutile and form the star.  Cut the wrong direction, there is no star!  Regular sapphires (of any color) don't have rutile.  Visit my Gem and Wire Wrapped Jewelry section for more earrings! https://www.etsy.com/shop/SumireDesign?section_id=8049947 Have questions or want more pictures?
